Wash Painting and Bengal School

In the early 20th century, the prominent anti-colonial nationalist movement had its impact on India’s art scenario as well. Indian artists consciously renounced western techniques of painting and celebrated traditional means of paintings such as tempera. During this time, in 1903, Yokoyama Taikan and Hisbida Sbunso- two disciples of Japanese scholar and art critic Okakura visited Rabindranath Tagore in Kolkata. Tagore’s nephew, artist Abanindranath Tagore witnessed these artists’ technique of wash watercolour paintings and developed the same along with some alterations to it, as a pan-Asian watercolour technique. This unique technique of creating a dreamy visual with layers of transparent watercolour and then washing them subsequently was carried forward by many of Abanindranath Tagore’s disciples such as Nandalal Bose, Kshitindranath Majumdar, Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Mukul Dey, Asit Kumar Haldar etc. This new school of art practice, led by Abanindranath and other artists from Bengal came to be known as the “Bengal School” in Indian art history.
